Art in Nature Camp July 9th-11th, 9am-1pm
Art in Nature is a curated crafting program for teens and tweens that explores the intersections of the natural and created world. Campers will utilize a variety of artistic mediums to see and interpret the wildly beautiful world around us.
Amber of Hold Steady Designs will lead campers in a number of nature inspired mixed media craft projects such as indigo dying and terrarium building. Local artist Ron Rash will teach campers how to sketch in the field and turn those sketches into watercolored pieces of art.
When: July 9th-11th, 9am-1pm
Where: Wilbur D. May Garden Patio in Rancho San Rafael Park
Who: Tweens and Teens Ages 10+
Price: $225* per camper ($175** early bird)
Each camper registration includes a $50 nonrefundable deposit
*Early bird pricing through June 1st
Ready to see your teen or tween’s creativity bloom? Here is some of what campers can expect from their time at Art in Nature:
Learn from local artist Ron Rash how to develop a piece from inspiration to sketch to stylized watercolor painting.
Explore the process of natural indigo dying to make a custom t-shirt and bandana.
Collect and press wildflowers to be used in later projects using their flower press they will take home.
Build a mini ecosystem within a small glass terrarium.
Create a beautiful mixed media art and wall hanging.
In addition to gaining practical artistic skills, campers learn to be present and disconnect from the noisy worlds of screens and social media. As much as we may love hopping online, an endless stream of content makes it easy to accidentally clog out our own creative voice. Reconnecting to nature can quiet the noise and help us reconnect to our authentic sense of self.
Vision & Values:
Social media and pop culture can be wonderful - they are how we find our favorite songs, artists, and inspiration for new projects and ideas. But with an endless stream of content, it is easy to reach a point where we lose ourselves in the noise. For growing tweens and teens in particular, there can be immense pressure to look a certain way, like certain things, or emulate certain behaviors.
Through guided crafts and activities, Campers explore their unique creative voice and vision. Instead of crafts being focused on reproducing a sample, campers reconnect with the process of feeling inspired, playful, and curious. Camper creations don’t have to be or look like anything other than what feels good to create.
Our hope is to foster skills that help campers metabolize outside influences so they can keep the connection and inspiration and, let go of the rest. We build self-esteem by giving campers an opportunity to find joy in themselves and connect with art and nature!
